Government Official States MoD Examining Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Staff Told to Refrain from Secret Talk in Cars.

A defence official has stated that the MoD is actively investigating the potential threats posed by Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been told to avoid discussing secret information in any vehicles.

Security Guidance for MoD Personnel

In a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss secret material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a issue in every contemporary cars.

Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any vehicle, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Defence Context

This announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable China to disable public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.

The broader defence situation underscores the significance of robust protocols and caution in all aspects of official activities, including vehicle usage to discussions practices.
