Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
